Wherever you go, you are bound to see a digital camera. Whether you are looking to get you first digital camera or are looking to repace an existing one, it is best to become familiar with the characteristics of most of the digital cameras on the market today. The digital camera, like the film camera, has a lens. It brings the light into focus on light sensitive material called a "CCD". It plays the same part as film would in a film camera. The lens allows the light to fall onto the CCD. The light is then changed into a digital image. The lens's quality can make a very big difference in the clarity of the image. The very cheap digital camera may use a piece of plastic for the lens which will be very noticeable in the quality of the picture. The more expensive the digital camera is, the higher grade lens it will have.

The CCD also brings another important advantage to the digital camera. It is possible to adjust light sensitivity automatically to improve contrast, take black and white pictures, shoot in dim light,etc. all with a single touch of a button. One of the advantages of a digital camera is that it can offer versatility without needing to change film all of the time. Not all of the digital cameras on the market have these features, so just be sure to ask yourself if this is a feature that you absolutely need.

With a digital camera, the CCD is composed of a grid of points that are sensitive to light. These points capture the image which will be converted into the digital image. The number of points that a CCD has is measured in the term of "mega pixels". When you rate a mega pixel, you are measuring the camera's resolution or the camera's ability to be able to store details of a certain image. What eactly does more mega pixels mean? The higher the number of mega pixels, the more detail that is stored in the digital camera. If you are planning to print on a printer that captures high quality photographs, then you will want to go with a camera that is higher in mega pixels.

Most people today print their film in prints that are 4x6, and that is what many people are doing with their digital cameras today as well. Ask to see sample pictures that are taken with the digital camera you are interested in purchasing. Do not bee fooled by exquisite still life images. If most of your pictures are taken of friends standing around, then take a sample picture of some people standing around with the camera you wish to buy. Run the image off on a demonstrator printer and compare the image.

Another very important thing to consider when buying a digital camera is if you merely desire a point and shoot feature or if you want all of the features of buttons that you have to manually adjust to produce srystal clear images. Only you can decide which feature is best for you.
