Digital Cameras: The Choices

Digital cameras have completely overrun the older film cameras and it seems unlikely that you'll ever use a film camera again unless you happen to have an old one lying around somewhere. The new digital cameras have everything it seems.

They give the owner amazing control over images. You can plug a cord into your computer and transfer all your images for all types of editing effects. You can crop, adjust and correct colors and contrast, add textures and all kinds of special effects. You can create prints from an inkjet or snapshot printer or take it to a store and run off prints for your friends. You can email the photos, make them into cards, put them on T-shirts or put them into digital picture frames or share them online.

The leading brands of digital cameras currently are Canon, Nikon, Kodak, Sony, Samsung, Olympus, Casio, Fujifilm, HP and even General Electric is throwing a model into the ring.Subcompact cameras are the smallest and weigh in at 5 to 8 ounces. They easily fit into most pockets and currently can be found from around $200 to $350.

They are best for carrying around and their controls may make it a little awkward to operate the camera. Compact digital cameras are a little bigger, weigh 7-14 ounces and are priced from between $150 and $300. These are the most popular family cameras because they are simple to use. Advanced compact digital cameras are larger and heavier the the previous two, and have versatile controls and zoom lenses. They generally can be found from $280 to $850.

They're best for challenging lighting conditions - dim light or sunsets because of their controls and long zoom lense. They are heavy and a little bulky too. Super zoom cameras have very long zoom ranges - great for capturing sports events, travel photos and nature shots ; their super zoom lenses are usually more than 10x and because of this, they are heavier and larger than compacts.

Compacts and Super zoom digital cameras are about the same in cost ($250-700). Finally, SLR (single lens reflex) digital cameras are the largest and heaviest of these types of cameras but also are the most powerful and versatile of all digital cameras. Lenses can be swapped in and out and of course there are a huge number of accessories. These are also the most expensive digital cameras costing anywhere from $600 to $2000+ for consumer models. Professional models can cost thousands more.

You can't beat them for versatility however and you would be amazed at how much fun they are to use once you get the hang of all the features on them.
